Obese men should consider losing weight if they

want to have children, British researchers say, after finding that men with a higher body mass index (BMI) had lower volumes of seminal fluid and a higher proportion of abnormal sperm. The new findings were presented by Dr. A Ghiyath Shayeb, from the University of Aberdeen, at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

The results are based on seminal fluid analysis of 5,316 men attending Aberdeen Fertility Centre with their partners for difficulties in conceiving. The scientists divided the men into four groups according to their BMI, from being underweight to being considerably overweight. They then looked for a relationship between BMI and semen quality. The ana

lysis showed that the men who had an optimal BMI (20-25, as classified by WHO), had higher levels of normal sperm than those in the other groups. They also had higher semen volume. There was no significant difference between the four BMI groups in sperm concentration or motility.

The researchers did not look at DNA damage in the sperm, preferring to look at the parameters of the routine semen analysis, which all men attending the fertility centre will have at least once. "Other studies have suggested an association between male obesity and increased DNA damage in the sperm, which can be associated with reduced fertility as well," noted Shayeb.

"Our findings were quite independent of any other factors," he added, "and seem to suggest that men who are trying for a baby with their partners, should first try to achieve an ideal body weight. This is in addition to the benefit of a healthy BMI for their general well being."

The team intends to follow up their research by comparing male BMI in fertile and infertile couples to see if the poorer semen quality correlates with reduced fertility. "There has been a significant rise in the numbers of men with poorer semen parameters in the industrialized world," said Shayeb, "but this has not been reflected so far in male infertility. To compare male BMI in these two groups therefore seemed to us to be a logical next step."

Ejaculating more frequently improves men's sperm

quality by reducing the amount of DNA damage and improving sperm motility, Australian researchers reported to the 25th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam. Until now there has been no evidence-based consensus as to whether or not men should refrain from sex for a few days before attempting to conceive with their partner.

"We didn't know what w

as the best advice for the period leading up to ovulation or egg retrieval for IVF. I thought that frequent ejaculation might be a physiological mechanism to improve sperm DNA damage, while maintaining semen levels within the normal, fertile range," fertility specialist David Greening told the conference.

To investigate his hypothesis, Greening studied 118 men who

had higher than normal sperm DNA damage. The men were instructed to ejaculate daily for seven days and no other treatment or lifestyle changes were suggested. Before they started, levels of DNA damage ranged between 15 - 98 percent, with an average 34 percent DFI (DNA Fragmentation Index) when measured after three days' abstinence.

When the men's sperm was assessed after the week, Greening found that nearly all the men had a decrease in sperm DNA damage. The average DFI for the whole group dropped to 26 percent.

These changes were substantial and statistically highly significant," noted Greening. "In addition, we found that although frequent ejaculation decreased semen volume and sperm concentrations, it did not compromise sperm motility and, in fact, this rose slightly but significantly. Further research is required to see whether the improvement in these men's sperm quality translates into better pregnancy rates, but previous studies have shown the relationship between sperm DNA damage and pregnancy rates."

Greening added that while the optimal number of days of ejaculation might be more or less than seven days, a week appeared to be manageable. "It seems safe to conclude that couples with relatively normal semen parameters should have sex daily for up to a week before the ovulation date. In addition, these results may mean that men play a greater role in infertility than previously suspected, and that ejaculatory frequency is important for improving sperm quality."

Greening said he thought the reason why sperm quality improved with frequent ejaculation was because the sperm had a shorter exposure in the testicular ducts and epididymis to reactive oxygen species, high levels of which can damage cells.

Yeast can undergo sexual reproduction despite missing sex genes

Researchers at the Duke University Medical Center have found that an emerging form of the pathogenic yeast Candida can complete a full sexual cycle in a test tube, even though it is missing the genes for reproduction.

The researchers say that the yeast may also do so while infecting people.

"Sex contributes to the Candida yeast species'' evolutionary success. I think the fact that it has a complete sex cycle is likely to play a role in the evolution of drug resistance in this emerging pathogenic yeast species," said Dr. Joseph Heitman, director of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis in the Duke Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology.

Yeast infections are notoriously hard to treat. Humans are susceptible to three types of yeast infection: in the mouth and throat, vaginal infection, and a sometimes fatal systemic infection of bloodstream and organs, such as the kidney.

Heitman's team have identified eight Candida species that have a sexual cycle, but lack many of the genes related to reproduction found in other species.

"The unrecognized sex cycle could mean we need to develop new treatments to combat what is really happening in humans infected by yeast," said co-author Dr. Jennifer Reedy.

The researchers then conducted another study to determine how could the yeast sexually produce spores when they lack so many genes responsible for meiosis, the process of sexual cell division that reduces chromosomes to half their number in the progeny.

They examined and defined the structure and functions of the mating-type genes in yeast, which helped them learn that forms of Candida yeast undergo meiosis but generate offspring of several types.

About two-thirds have the classic 50:50 division of chromosomes from the split parent cell, but a third of them have an extra chromosome or even double copies of all chromosomes.

"What we found is that the sexual cycle has a new way to create genetic diversity, and it provides a unique vantage point from which we can explore the mechanisms of sexual reproduction. This provides a new way to study sexual reproduction and how chromosomal abnormalities arise," Reedy said.

Heitman said that Candida''s meiosis without meiotic genes might be what gives rise to the progeny with unusual numbers of chromosomes.

"Or maybe the genes were lost for a reason, to provide a route to genetic diversity. Or maybe these differing types of progeny are the unfortunate consequence of undergoing meiosis without the machinery that species normally have when they reproduce sexually," Heitman said.

The researchers point out that humans, too, have their share of oddly paired chromosomes.

"Experts estimate that about 10 to 30 percent of human eggs or fusion products may be aneuploid, with chromosomes from mother and father not paired exactly one to one, but the great majority of those fusions of sperm and egg don''t make it to the implantation and pregnancy stage. That''s why it is important to find models like this, so that we may shed light on related human conditions," Reedy said.

The findings have been reported in two research papers, published in Nature and Current Biology. (ANI)

Recent study revealed that thoughts of sex can lead to sneezing. Dr Mahmood Bhutta, an ear,nose and throat specialist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford initiated a study to find whether there was any connection between thinking sexy thoughts and sneezing when a patient reported "uncontrollable" sneezing fits every time he had a sexual thought.

He scoured chatrooms looking for examples of conversations about sneezing and sex by typing both keywords into Google. During study, 17 people (both males and females) reported sneezing immediately after thinking about sex. Three of those people said they sneeze after achieving an orgasm.

Bhutta said, “I was surprised by how many people reported the same reflex in Internet chat rooms. I think this reflex demonstrates evolutionary relics in the wiring of a part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system.”
